With Gen. Kale Kayihura’s nemesis Brig. Leopold Kyanda back in Kampala and the rumour mill constantly spilling lines about the Inspector General of Police having been flown to India for urgent hospital treatment, Police spokesman Assan Kasingye has been forced to speak out.
Kasingye said says that Kayihura who flew out of the country last Tuesday is in Turkey on State duty, though he didn’t disclose details.
Kasingye said Kayihura had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Turkey. “The IGP is in Turkey on official duty. He has signed an MOU that we shall soon brief you about,” Kasingye told journalists.
But media reports keep quoting the battle hardened General’s aides about the man from Kisoro collapsing after being attacked by a strange disease two weeks ago after attending duties at the Nalufenya based detention center. Doctors close to Kayihura are said to have revealed to the Police boss that he has been overworking and that stress had rained on him.
Kayihura was conspicuously missing at both the State of The Nation address and budget reading last week, events a person holding his office traditionally attends, speculation has been rife about his health status with some news outlets reporting that he is gravely ill.
“Government has decided that Kayihura receives treatment from India on the recommendation of his personal doctors who had been treating him at his spacious Muyenga home,” local journalist Francis Otucu said. “His aides confirmed that the General has now spent five days receiving treatment in India.”
In the absence of IGP Kayihura, his deputy Okoth Ochola has taken over the reins.
