Hearing of application seeking to block Uganda Communications Commission’s seven-day ultimatum on the Sim card Verification exercise is ongoing in camera at the Kampala High Court.
High Court Assistant Registrar Joy Kabagye is presiding, with only UCC lawyers and petitioners. The public and press are not allowed to observe the procedure or process.
TheUgandan understands that a ruling will be made after 3pm Ugandan time.
UCC was dragged to court for giving Ugandans a short time to re-register sim cards or be switched off.
Rights Trumpet Ltd, a non-government organistaion advocating for human rights through its lawyers of Nuwagaba and Mwebesa advocates says the time frame issued by UCC is inadequate to cover the millions of Ugandans who use mobile phones.
The NGO also challenges the act of UCC to restrict Ugandans to only use National IDs as the official identification document for this exercise and deny them the right to use their passports and other official documents issued by the Ugandan Government.
They also say Ugandans in the diaspora are being discriminated against as there are no registration centers set up for Ugandans abroad.
