Ugandan diplomat loses 5 family members as Buikwe motor accident death toll reaches 10

Tragedy has on Tuesday night struck the family of the First Secretary at Uganda Embassy Brussels, James Bichachi Wafula.

Mr. Wafula’s brother in law, an uncle, a sister and a nephew as well as a neighbour all died from injuries sustained in a traffic accident at Mbikko Kitigoma in Buikwe District along Kampala- Jinja highway.

He posted the following on his Facebook page:, “Disturbing news. One of the taxis was traveling to my home village and son far I have learned of the death of my brother in law, an uncle, a sister and a nephew aa well as a neighbour. I am headed to Jinja in this dark night to try to recover the bodies. So so sad and tragic.”

Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, Mr Lamek Kigozi said the accident involved three cars; two taxis, one from Old taxi park Reg. No UAW 200W heading to Mbale and another Reg. No. UAL 278F traveling to Busia and a Fuso truck Reg. No UAN 447X .

Toroma Country MP Cyrus Amodoi Imalingat is among those confirmed dead in a crash.

One of the taxis was traveling from Busia to Kampala while the other was reportedly moving in the opposite direction.

Eyewitnesses also said among those killed were students of Uganda Martrys’ University Nkozi who were from graduating as they were wearing graduation gowns, an indication she was from attending the Tuesday graduation ceremony.

The bodies of the dead were taken to Jinja Referral Hospital mortuary and the casualties to the same health facility and Kawolo General Hospital.
