Selected leaders of Kampala led by the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago are meeting the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga, two days after the Nakivubo Park Yard Market in Kampala has been razed, traders and politicians assaulted and thousands of men and women who sell motley merchandise there displaced.
On Monday morning, unknown persons backed by police razed down the market on the directive of Kampala minister Betty Kamya who had given them 30 days to vacate and allow room for redevelopment of the area. The minister argued that the market did not meet basic planning requirements and that KCCA would not gazette it because it is illegal.
Now according to Lukwago, this is a matter which needs parliament’s intervention, adding that they are already busy in a meetiing with the speaker and are set to deliberate on the matter.
He said that the ongoing trend of redevelopment in the city is not sustainable and the only option they have is to engage the speaker.
Over 15,000 traders were operating from the market with many working there for the last 30 years.
We shall keep you posted about the outcomes.
