Traders at park yard market in Kampala counting losses as their stalls are demolished.

Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago and his Kampala Capital City Authority councilors are in down town Kampala to visit the market after this morning’s eviction.

Makerere University Councilor Doreen Nyanjura moved the motion to march down to the heavily guarded market. Over 10 police patrol vehicles and 2 trucks full of anti riot policemen are deployed around the place.

“Everybody is saying they are not aware of who authorised the operation of evicting vendors from Park Yard market,” Mayor Lukwago said in Monday’s council meeting at City Hall.

Ms Kamya in a February 7, 2017 directive gave traders at the Park Yard market thirty days to vacate, which should lapse in a week. The minister says the land in contention belongs to the Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium which, she says, agrees to give it up for redevelopment.

Mr Lukwago instead describing it as a ploy by the government to grab land. (Photos by NTV)
