Besigye to address international conference on Uganda in Netherlands

Opposition leader Kizza Besigye is expected to address the annual gathering of the Ugandan community in Europe tomorrow.

Dr. Besigye will seek to explain to Ugandans abroad the prevailing political situation in the country as he rallies them to back efforts at home to dislodge what he called President Museveni’s “dictatorship”

The former presidential candidate is on a Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party on a working visit to Europe and on Tuesday landed in Brussels, Belgium, his aides confirmed. A group photo of Dr. Besigye, Prince Dickson Wasajja the FDC’s envoy to UK/FDC Party Chairman United Kingdom Chapter and two white gentlemen was making rounds on social media.

Netherlands-based Dr. Besigye supporter, Moses Atocon Atyekwo told TheUgandan on Wednesday that,” the Uganda Diaspora and other civic society organisations in Netherlands are organising an “International Conference on Uganda” scheduled from 23rd- 26th February 2017 in The Hague, the Netherlands.”

The three days’ convention aims at arriving at a consensus on the roadmap for a; United, Decisive Constitutional Reforms, Electoral Reforms, the Peaceful transition of power in Uganda, and vulnerable minorities.

The three days’ convention will bring together stakeholders in the political, social and economic development of Uganda e.g. but not limited to members of the ruling government party, opposition leaders, Members of Parliament (MPs), Representative from Uganda’s: Judiciary, Civic Society Organizations (CSOs), Religious Leaders, Cultural Leaders who form the nexus of Uganda’s peace, stability and development.

In addition, they have invited distinguished international, local and Diaspora based pro-democracy and pro-human rights intelligentsia as well as a representative from International Criminal Court (ICC) European Union (EU) the Dutch government and Uganda’s strategic development partners.

At the convention, there will be a special screening of an award-winning documentary, ‘A Brilliant Genocide’. ‘This is a 2016 documentary film produced by Atlantic Star Productions and directed by Ebony Butler whose purpose of the film is to reveal atrocities allegedly committed against the Acholi people of Northern Uganda.

Besigye, who last year spent more than two months in prison after the contested 2016 presidential elections and is battling treason charges for his stance that he won the elections, on Thursday is expected to maintain he had won the polls with 52 per cent. The Electoral Commission that has the mandate to declare the winner announced President Museveni as the victor with 60 per cent and Dr. Besigye as runner-up with 35 per cent.
