The Uganda Electricity Generation Company (UEGCL) says they are on track for the completion of Isimba and Karuma dams — two of the country’s most ambitious energy projects expected to double the power output.
The contractors for Karuma and Isimba dams are Chinese firms Synohydro and China Water and Electric (CWE) respectively.
Both tenders were valued at Shs7.1 trillion with 85 percent funding from the EXIM Bank of China- Shs5.7 trillion and Shs1.4 trillion for Karuma and Isimba.
According to Ms Margaret Proscovia Njuki, the newly appointed board chairperson of UEGCL, Eng. Dr. Harrison Mutikanga the UEGCL chief executive officer since taking charge has done well to neutralize the infighting and reversed questionable construction that were jeopardising the projects.
“I want to commend the good job done by UEGCL. We will increase generation capacity and continue to implement the government’s projects of Karuma and Isimba which were planned to be completed by next year,” Ms Njuki said at the Lake Victoria Serena Resort, Kigo in Wakiso District after she had taken up up office from Dr. Stephen Isabalijja for a three-year renewable term.
Eng. Dr. Harrison Mutikanga welcomed Ms Njuki to UEGCL that currently manages four dams and revealed that the new team would lay strategies for the next five years.
