Over 4 million Uganda PWDs seek equality

Government has expressed commitment towards prioritizing disability issues in its National Development Plan.

This was during the launch of the 5-year National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) strategic plan at Golf Course Hotel, Kampala.

Judith Mutabaazi the focal officer in charge of population and social development at the National Planning Authority said in formulating the 3rd national development Plan, more emphasis will be put on social- economic transformation, legal services, health, infrastructure and education among others for persons with disabilities as a way of promoting equality for all Ugandans.

The Executive Director, National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU) Edson Ngirabakunzi explains that the new strategic plan (2020-2024) aims at promoting the social-economic empowerment of persons with disabilities in the country in order to uplift their welfare.

Ngirabakunzi added that there are planning to build a strong coordinated disability movement that will fight for the rights of persons with disabilities as well as training their leaders at various levels.

According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics 2014 national population report, Uganda has over 4 million people with disabilities.
