The 2016 UCE results released on Tuesday indicate that fewer candidates registered Division 1, 2 and 3 in 2016 compared to those registered in 2015.

According to UNEB chairperson Prof. Mary Okwakol, the results of as many as 1,893 candidates had been withheld.
Okwakol also revealed that of the 323,276 candidates that registered, 316,624 sat the final exams, with more boys (2.2%) than girls (1.99%) absent.

Here is what UNEB said about the decline in performance;

  • Difficulties reported in the use of correct grammar, spelling, tenses and punctuations when writing English compositions.
  • Despite slight improvement in Biology, percentage pass levels for science subjects remain low.
  • Teachers make students cram passages from books, students reproduce these in answer to questions requiring imaginative composition.
  • Candidates were not able to express themselves in papers that requires them to offer answers in essay form.Despite Ministry of Education and Sports’ efforts to avail lab chemicals and equipment, there is still evidence of theoretical teaching of sciences.Students experienced problems in handling apparatus during practical tests and found difficulty with questions requiring explanation.

    Teachers of science subjects masquerade as lab technicians to help candidates.
