The surge in gun violence continues with the latest attack happening this week in the Sebei region of north eastern Uganda, TheUgandan reports.
According to the Uganda Peoples Defence Force (UPDF) 3rd Division commander, Dick Olum, one Police officer, Sgt Emmanuel Totwala was on Tuesday killed in an exchange of gunfire with 14 armed thugs that attacked Ngenge Police post in Kween District with the intention of making away with guns.
The attack was carried out at 5.30pm and the gunmen managed to take off with one gun at the police post that was being manned by only two officers at the time.
The army quickly responded and killed two of the fleeing gunmen who had run out of bullets at the Police post before taking out of action two more minutes later while crossing River Ngenge heading towards the mountains. The identities of the attackers were not revealed by the army or Police.
Olum said the army had recovered the gun taken from the late Totwala and they also managed to capture six of the gunmen while the hunt is till on for the remaining four who didn’t go back to the cave where the gunmen reportedly hide and training from – state-owned New Vision said UPDF found saucepans, plates and phones in the cave and the gunmen are not associated to Julius Chelimo, who used to command the group that attacked Kapchorwa Central Police station in 2016.
UPDF spokesperson Richard Karemire said the army was camping in Ngenge and ‘The situation has normalized.”
